Chau Xuan Hung, 25, from Ha Tinh Province, has spent three years working as a 6G welder on energy projects for Mitsubishi Power Europe, a member of Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, under Germany’s skilled worker visa scheme.
A 6G welder is a skilled professional who has passed a pipe-welding test in the 6G position, which is widely regarded as one of the most difficult positions in industrial welding. This qualification is commonly required for energy facilities, oil refineries and high-pressure piping systems with demanding technical standards.

Hung’s work involves welding piping systems at thermal power plants, oil refineries and other major energy facilities across Europe.
According to Hung, highly skilled welders in Vietnam can earn between VND 30 million and VND 60 million per month, depending on their capabilities and the projects they work on.
In Germany and many other European countries, meanwhile, 6G welders typically earn between EUR 2,500 and EUR 3,700 per month, equivalent to approximately VND 75.4 million–111.6 million. This figure does not include additional support for insurance, accommodation or travel expenses.
On social media, Hung regularly shares videos documenting welding techniques and working processes, attracting millions of views.
Hung noted that one of the most significant differences when working in Germany and other European countries is the constant need to learn and keep up with new technologies. Continuously improving one’s skills is not only necessary to meet job requirements but also essential for remaining competitive in the international labour market.
In return, highly skilled technical workers can receive attractive incomes and a range of employee benefits. For Hung, however, an even greater reward is the opportunity to discover new places and experience different cultures.
“If workers continue learning and improving their professional skills, they can find extensive opportunities for development in international markets,” Hung said.
